β Select healthy, organic seed potatoes with at least 2-3 eyes (sprouts) per potato.
β Avoid potatoes that are rotten, moldy, or shriveled.
Step 2: Cut into Sections
πͺ Using a clean, sharp knife, cut large seed potatoes into chunks, each containing 1-3 eyes.
π Each piece should be about the size of a golf ball for best results.
π₯ Tip: If the potato is small (egg-sized or smaller), plant it whole!
Step 3: Cure the Cut Pieces (VERY IMPORTANT!)
π After cutting, let the pieces air-dry for 24-48 hours in a cool, dry place.
π This allows a protective “skin” (callus) to form over the cut surface, preventing rot and infection.
π Optional: Dust cut surfaces with wood ash or sulfur powder for extra protection against disease.
Step 4: Plant the Seed Potatoes
π± Dig a trench 3-4 inches deep and space the potato pieces 12 inches apart.
π Place cut side down, sprout side up, then cover with soil.
π¦ Water lightly after planting and keep soil moist but not soggy.
